Communication

Communication is a wonderful thing when it occurs. These words from George B. Shaw remind us that communication is difficult and challenging. Lest you doubt, let me share some samples from folks who make their living communicating--those who write newspaper headlines.

In our society, especially visible in the media but also in everyday interactions, a greater problem than whether communication occurs is the vulgarization of speech. Christians who communicate clearly and wisely influence others toward Christ and provide a visible contrast to the ways of the world. Paul wrote, “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone” (Col. 4:5-6). A children’s song yet in my memory says it well: “O be careful little lips what you say…for the Father up above is looking down in love.”
