The Servant of the Lord
Text: 2 Tim. 2:1-8
by Robert J. Young
(prepared for OVC Freshman Celebration, 1996)
Introduction
Today briefly look at the Bible, practical, gives advice for your time at OVC. Paul writing to Timothy uses at least seven metaphors--son, soldier, athlete, farmer, criminal, workman, instrument. We will look at only four.
1. Be strong as a Son
a. Be careful, conduct yourself so parents can be proud of you
b. Be empowered, live in God's grace through Jesus Christ
c. Be teachable so you may go forth to teach others competently, ably, with strength
2. Be single minded as an athlete (soldier)
a. We do not experience much genuine hardship, perhaps a little. Life is a place where we learn to suffer ill with, we learn to handle mistreatment, a Christian college is not that because of student behavior, or professor behavior, but because of the values, principles, and ethics that undergird our goals and dreams.
1) do what needs to be done at times when you would rather not
2) act with essential self-discipline when it would be easier to slide (illustration: Olympics)
b. Do not get involved in more than you can handle
1) singleness of purpose
2) avoid distractions
c. Compete according to the rules
3. Be diligent and eager as a workman
a. you are presenting yourself and your works to God
b. diligent workmen have no cause for shame
c. diligent workmen handle God's word of truth correctly
4. Be noble and honorable as God's instrument or vessel
a. You are being made holy, set apart for a purpose, God dwelling within
b. You can be useful to the Master
c. You are being prepared for any good work
